You can access the various motorcycle categories by direct access or progressive access.
Direct access is where you have not previously held a full motorcycle licence in a lower category.
Progressive access applies to categories A2 and A. This means that you may be allowed to complete a course of training to get the higher motorcycle category full licence.
Min Age 16
Two- wheeled mechanically propelled veichle, not capable of being manually propelled. The machine must have a cylinder capacity no exceeding 50cc in the case of an internal combustion engine, or a maximum continus rated power of no more than 4kW in the case of an electric motor. The vehical must have a design speed of at least 25 km/h but not more than 45 km/h
Min Age 16
A motorcycle without sidecar, with a cylinder capacity of at least 115cc and not exceding 125cc, and capable of a speed of at least 90 km/h, with and engine not exceeding 11 kW and with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg. If the motorcycle is powered by an electric motor, the power to weight ratio of the vechicle shall be at least 0.08 kW kg
Min Age 18
A motorcycle without sidecar and an engine power of at least 20kW but not exceeding 35kW and with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.1 kW/kg. If the motorcycle is powered by an electric motor, the power to weight ratio of the vehicle shall be at least 0.08 kW/kg
Min Age 24 (Direct Access)
Age 20 (Progressive Access From Full A2)
A motorcycle without a sidecar, with a cylinder capacity of at least 595cc, an unladen mass of more than 175kg and an engine power of at least 50kW. If the motorcycle is powered by an electric motor, the power to weight ratio of the vehicle shall be at least 0.25 kW/kg

Initial Basic Training (IBT) was introduced in December 2010 and updated again on 19 Jan 2013.
An (I.B.T) course can only be delivered by IBT certified instructors which are regulated by the RSA. Course can help learner drivers to master basic motorcycling skills and improve your knowlege of road safety.
